This is what my morning routine looks like

Every day is different. Some days are packed with activities, while others are more laid-back because, as we say, “we cannot come and kill ourselves.” It’s been proven time and time again that the best way to maximize each day — and life in general — is by having a routine or structure to guide our activities. And I’m all for it.

My daily routine has evolved over the years. There was a time when the first thing I did after getting out of bed was look for food. I was such an FFO (for food only). That was back when I was living rent-free in my father’s house. These days, adulthood and the responsibilities that come with it have curbed my appetite. Now, I understand that if you eat anyhow, you’ll starve anyhow.

Before I dive in, let me give you some context. I’m a nine-to-fiver, but my work is hybrid — 90% remote and 10% onsite. It’s been this way for the last two to three years, which has greatly impacted my daily routine since I don’t have to rush out and join Lagos traffic every morning.

So, here’s what my daily routine looks like:

Sit and stare

Yes, I mean it. This is my system booting period. Even though my wife would swear I wake up like I never slept (because of how quickly I get up with clear eyes), my system usually needs a few minutes to recalibrate. So whether I sit up, lie down, or walk around, I just take a moment to silently express gratitude to God for another day.

Say a word of prayer

I never start my day without connecting with my Maker. He’s the source of my strength, and starting the day in prayer grounds me, helping me connect with my inner self and tap into a realm of peace and clarity.

Make a cup of tea — no sugar

Maybe it’s just me, but tea in the morning gives me the kick I need. It warms my senses and gets me in the mood to work. As soon as I leave the bedroom, I make myself a cup — no sugar, just the way I like it. :)

Read a book

For at least 10 minutes, I make time to read. It really helps me get into the creative zone for the day. I start by reading the “Verse of the Day” on my Bible app, then move on to whatever book I’m currently reading. I even read aloud to improve my vocabulary and public speaking skills.

Work out

I’ll be honest — I don’t do this every day. On lazy mornings, I skip it and jump straight into the day. But there’s always a noticeable difference when I do work out. I try to do push-ups, sit-ups, and maybe jog. It helps me sweat and gets my creative juices flowing. I feel lighter, more energized, and alert.

Write at least 100 words

This is one of my favourite morning activities, just picking up my laptop and typing away! That’s how write-ups like this come to life. Although a lot of what I write stays in my drafts, it’s still therapeutic. It’s my way of untangling my thoughts, fears, and excitement.

Create a to-do list and work

This is where my workday truly begins. Before diving into tasks, I create a list of deliverables and organize them by priority, including any meetings or deadlines. Since becoming a dad, I try to get as much done as possible before my baby wakes up. She demands attention (lol), and family time is precious, so I make sure to spend quality time with my wife and daughter.

And that’s my morning routine. You’ll notice I didn’t mention breakfast — that goes without saying, right? No one can function without eating! Thankfully, my wife often takes care of that, and when she’s not up for it, I step in and whip up something nice for both of us.

Speaking of which, my baby just came out to say “Gooo daaady!” — baby language for “Good morning, Daddy.” 😀

One last note before I sign off: There’s a lot of distraction waiting for us each day, but a solid morning routine helps you stay focused. Think of it as a daily victory, no matter the weather or the challenges ahead.
