The ghosting culture of Nigerian artistes

For the last two days, social media has been buzzing with the groans of dissatisfied fans of popular afrobeats crooner, Wizkid. According to reports, Wizkid was billed to headline a show at the Ghana stadium, but he didn’t show up.

The no-show might have been made worse by the fact that he touched down in the country a day before and even made an appearance at a show the same day. So why did he stand his fans up a day after?

If we add this to the long history of other cases, you will see that ghosting is gradually becoming a norm with our artistes. When you attend a Nigerian concert, you can actually bet your money on either getting stood up for long hours before seeing the main act, or not even seeing them at all.

Of course, they try to remedy the situation afterwards, but that doesn't take away the distasteful behaviour. It just keeps happening again and again.

Afrobeats is one of the few things we have going well for us on the global stage. In a way, it has helped the world see a different side of us. A side that is different from all the negative stories our image has been marred with over the years.

Let’s hope this trend is nipped in the bud and totally eschewed.
