Recover from the unexpected like a rockstar

I woke to a flooded apartment.

Well, not the entire two-bedroom space. The water started from the kitchen sink and spread into the living room. The only reason it didn’t get to other parts of the house was that I discovered it early enough to stop the flow.

It took about an hour to mop what must have been gallons of water off the floor. That’s how I started my day — mopping water! It was a very draining experience for me, but I had to do it regardless.

Mopping water is not my favourite thing to do in the morning, so you can imagine my frustration. The one-hour loss also meant I had been set back in my daily routine and would have to find a way to recover. And the recovery had to be fast!

We all have daily routines that make our clocks tick. Any tiny disruption can destabilize us and be the reason we don’t meet up with deadlines. It’s a real issue.

But life is unpredictable.

No matter how well the day is planned out, anything can happen. Expecting the unexpected should be a major consideration for everybody. Our ability to recover quickly and forge ahead is what makes us become achievers.

Not all disruption needs to turn your life upside-down.

So how can we deal with it?

Expect disruptions and accept them as part of life. Once you have this mindset, you will be less triggered by every little that gets in the way of your flow. It will help you get back on track every time.

Always remember your motivation, and get excited. That’s the only thing that can get you. Remember why you have a routine in the first place and keep your eyes on the prize. Let it be the motivation you need to forge ahead.

There’s nothing wrong with a little disruption now and then. Sometimes, it can even present learning opportunities. Open your mind to these possibilities and you will do just fine.
